Introduction

The CCIH Annual Conference is a professionally and personally enriching event where current issues, policies and best practices in global health and development are uniquely blended with worship and fellowship through plenary and breakout sessions, informal discussions, networking opportunities, exhibits and time for individual introspection. The participants from around the world are a diverse mix of health and development professionals, church and lay leaders, and students. The atmosphere is professional, yet informal and relaxing.

Our 25th Annual Conference, was held June 9-12, 2011 at the Bishop Claggett Center in Buckeystown, Maryland, north of Washington, DC. We have come to appreciate the beautiful retreat surroundings of the Claggett Center as well as the modern conference facility which allows us to meet in comfort. The conference began on Thursday morning, June 9, with Pre-conference Skills Building Sessions and ended at 3:30pm on Sunday, June 12.

The theme of the 2011 conference was Sustaining a Christian Foundation for Health in a Changing World.

At this year’s conference we examined the distinctive contributions of the Christian health and development community as they work within an increasingly interdependent and changing world in which many factors and international trends can influence which diseases and health conditions receive funding and drive donor program priorities. We identified and discussed how past performance, current realities and future possibilities support and challenge the Christian community as they partner with local, national and international communities, both religious and secular, to address health and development needs by building local long-term capacity through wholistic and transformative development rather than by simply fulfilling donor objectives.

Conference participants learned from each other through the sharing of ideas, experiences and lessons learned. They discussed, questioned and debated, and ultimately encountered and celebrated, their common Christian foundation which informs and inspires their work and lives: as a community and as individuals, both professionally and personally.
