Founded in 1906, American Leprosy Missions (ALM) provides care to people
around the world with leprosy and disabilities. ALM is a non-denominational
Christian ministry of hope and restoration for those suffering with the
disease. The ministry now supports more than 150 projects in 24 countries.
ALM is helping patients in these countries around the world.
The mission of ALM is to serve as a channel of the love of Christ to
people with leprosy and to those with disabilities, helping them to be
healed in body and spirit and to be restored to lives of dignity and usefulness
within their communities. During 1999, over 36,000 people received the
cure for leprosy through ALM's Campaign to Cure. The goal for the year
2000 is to cure 40,000 people.
ALM is a member of the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations
which partners with WHO, Novartis (donating free drugs), and the
Nippon Foundation for the The Global Alliance for the Elimination of Leprosy.
This 6-year campaign aims at eliminating leprosy around the world. Non-governmental
organizations, historically, churches and Christian missions, have been
major pioneers and contributors to leprosy control.
ALM also collaborates with Volunteers In Medical Missions (VIMM) to
organize short-term teams of 12-15 volunteers to work in rural medical
clinics in third-world countries and to provide general medical services,
including dentistry. For information ,contact VIMM at Volunteers In Medical
