CYBER-CCIH: FREE ACCESS
TO MEDLINE
On June 26, 1997, the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) (www.nlm.nih.gov/)
announced that its MEDLINE database of more than 8.8 million references
to articles published in 3800 biomedical journals may be accessed free
of charge on the World Wide Web. Access to Medline is provided via two
Web-based products: PubMed at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/;
and Internet Grateful Med at www.igm.nlm.nih.gov.
Below is a brief description of the Grateful Med system.
| Internet Grateful Med Provides free access
to MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, HealthSTAR, AIDSDRUGS, AIDSTRIALS, DIRLINE, HISTLINE,
HSRPROJ, OLDMEDLINE and SDILINE. A User ID Code is not needed.
Can use Loansome Doc Document Delivery service (for domestic U.S. and
Canadian health professional users; local charges may apply). A User ID
Code is needed for this feature.
Search features: Utilize full range of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH)
search features using UMLS Metathesaurus. Ability to limit searches by
language, publication type, age groups, etc., using pull-down menus.

A number of websites now offer free access to Medline. Check out the
list at www.invivo.net/bg/medline.html.
However, all Medline access sites are not the same. Some sites only provide
free access to certain parts of the Medline database. Some permit quite
detailed searching, others allow simple keywords only. Some have usage
restrictions. Some sites, like www.healthgate.com,
permit you to download your search results. You can upload results into
a bibliographic software program like ProCite or Reference Manager (www.risinc.com)
or MedPro (www.shareware.com). This
is like having a customized Medline on your desktop or laptop computer.
