I tend to agree with Paul Farmer. I think that NGOs should get
together to collaborate with and strengthen the Haitian health care
system. Instead of duplicating services and each doing our own thing,
why don't we buy equipment and supplies and help to purchase
medications for their clinics. They should open up their clinics to a
limited degree to qualified, certified health professionals from this
country who want to work with them for short and long term periods.
Part of this working together should include teaching--Haitian
professional teaching outsiders about tropical medicine, particularly
medicine in Haiti, and outsiders teaching the Haitian health
professionals about how to be use the diagnostic equipment that we
help to supply their clinics with, surgical techniques, neonatal care,
judicious use of antibiotics, aspects of speciality medicine that are
useful for general doctors, etc.
