The Partnership for Quality Medical Donations, (PQMD), _www.pqmd.org_
(http://www.pqmd.org) , has developed a new mapping tool that provides
unprecedented access to information about the medical product donations being made
by humanitarian organizations, pharmaceutical companies and medical device
manufacturers to the world's most vulnerable populations. The mapping tool
offers the global health community a resource for sharing information,
providing access to an enhanced level of comprehensive, efficient, and accurate
information about medical product donation information.
PQMD was formed in 1996 by a group of NGOs, FBOs, and pharmaceutical and
medical supply manufacturers who share a common commitment to advancing
effective drug and medical supply donation practices. Five of the 28 PQMD
members are also CCIH members, namely, Catholic Medical Mission Board, IMA World
Health, International Aid, MAP International, Medical Teams International,
World Vision.
The innovative mapping tool was developed with the support of
Pharmaceutical Research Manufacturers Association, Loma Linda University Health
Geoinformatics Program, Pfizer, Inc. and International Aid, a CCIH member. PQMD is
using Google Map technology combined with VisionLink, Inc.'s Tapestry™
Software Suite to provide information on where and how donations are used by
the communities who receive them. PQMD members donated $4,244,213,919 in
pharmaceuticals, medical devices, supplies and equipment to health programs in
150 countries in 2007.
The tool allows anyone to see where PQMD member donations are sent, and how
and where they are used. Users can search donations by several criteria
including organization and nation. "IMA is proud to be part of this effort,"
said Paul Derstine, President. "PQMD members now have a valuable resource
tool to improve overall efficacy through increased collaboration and
coordination of efforts."
The mapping tool can be accessed at _http://www.pqmd.org/cms/flash_slide_2_

PQMD's mission is "dedicated to the development, dissemination and
adherence to high standards in the delivery of medical products to under-served
people and disaster victims around the world.
PQMD objectives are:
- Develop and promote sound donation practices by donor and recipient
organizations
- Represent members' interests before national and international agencies
responsible for policy formulation affecting medical product donations and
distribution
- Encourage documentation and scholarly study of health and socioeconomic
impacts of the donation of health care products and services
- Educate audiences on member projects and programs that serve to
encourage replication of appropriate donation practices.
New members are added by invitation and based on the strategic needs of
the organization. For further information, contact Lori Warrens, Executive
Director, at _lwarrens at pqmd.org_ (mailto:lwarrens at pqmd.org) or (770) 887-8607
