A remarkable event took place in Washington on Tuesday evening. Bill and
Melinda Gates of the Gates Foundation spoke to a large audience of
government officials, Congressional leaders, and other influential leaders about the
major achievements in global health that have occurred as a result of U.S.
investments. They strongly advocated for a continuing U.S. commitment to
global health, even in the midst of the current global financial crisis,
because of the tremendous return on U.S. investments in terms of lives saved,
health, and productivity.

They called it "The Living Proof Project." Here is a brief description,
along with links to their 68-minute presentation.

On October 27, Bill and Melinda Gates spoke to a crowd of political and
media leaders in Washington D.C. Their speech, entitled "Why We Are Impatient
Optimists," wove together images and stories to showcase the significant
progress made, as a result of U.S. investments in global health, in the
fight to end deaths from preventable and treatable disease. Although optimistic
about progress to date, Mr. and Mrs. Gates urged policymakers to continue
investing in this life-saving work. To view the speech online, go to

This speech was part of an awareness-raising campaign, launched last month
by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, called The Living Proof Project:
U.S. Investments in Global Health are Working. The Living Proof Project
seeks to inform policymakers and the public about the impact of U.S.-supported
global health initiatives. A companion Web site brings global health success
stories to life with videos and personal profiles. The campaign has also
sponsored TV, radio, print, and online advertising in Washington D.C.,
featuring people from developing countries who are "living proof" that U.S.
investments are saving lives. To learn more about the Living Proof Project, go
