LATRINES: Lesson 3, 4, & 5

Digging a Latrine

Items needed: hoes, axes, digging tools, strong logs 5 feet long, grass, mud, pot with good top - broken out bottom, lid to fit well, grass mat, poles.

Select a place where a latrine is needed such as the church, market, school or compound. Students come with hoes, axes, and tools for digging a hole. Discuss other items needed and plan together before class time. During class time the students work together to dig a latrine.

HOW TO DIG A LATRINE:

1. Choose a place that is 50 to 100 feet from the well or water supply.

2. Do not put it close to the kitchen or eating place.

3. Choose a site on the side of the house where the wind will blow any odor away from the house.

4. Dig a hole 4 feet wide and 7 feet deep.

5. Strong logs or palm tree poles about 5 feet long will be needed to lay across the hole. Cover these with grass or mat. Leave a hole in the center to place a clay pot which has the bottom broken out of it. Plaster the grass and poles with mud or cement.

6. Find a lid to fit over the pot to keep flies out. Be sure the hole is always covered when not in use.

7. After finishing the latrine, surround the latrine with poles and a mat in order to give privacy for one using it.

CARE OF THE LATRINE:

A pot of ashes should be kept in the latrine to sprinkle into the hole after using This reduces odor and flies breeding. A few drops of kerosene or cycle oil can be dropped into the hole weekly to reduce fly and mosquito breeding also.

KEEP THE LATRINE PLACE CLEAN.

THE HOLE MUST BE WELL COVERED WHEN NOT IN USE.
