MALNUTRITION: Lesson
1
Mr. Audu Explains Nutrition for Children
Mr. Audu visited his friend Mr. Isa and family.
Mr. Isa Sami and his family lived near the market of a certain village.
Mr. Audu reached his friend's house at night.
Mr. Isa and his wife were happy to see him. They prepared a place for him
to sleep.
Mr. Isa and wife thought about the kind of food
they should fix for their guest. They decided to kill a chicken, roast
some ground nuts, cook eggs, beans and fish and also give him some fruit.
All of this kind of food Mr. Isa had never eaten with his family.
The woman prepared the food and brought it to
their guest, Mr. Audu. After they had brought the food to the guest, their
children were brought into the house. None of them were strong, they all
had huge bellies and red hair. There were flies sitting around their eyes.
When they were given their food, Mr. Audu noticed that it was different
than his. They had porridge with soup made from fruit of the baobab tree.
Mr. Audu felt uncomfortable when he saw his nice
variety of food and then looked at what the children were eating.
Mr. Audu called Isa and his wife and said, "What
is this you have dine?" He also asked if this was the kind of food
that the children always ate. They said yes. Mr. Audu said that they should
not always give them the same kind of food but that they needed a variety
including beans, groundnuts, meat, green vegetables, and fruit along with
the porridge. He told them that if they fed their children like this, their
children's bodies would become healthier and their skin would shine. Mr.
Audu suggested they give the children either some ground nuts or beans
when meat was not available along with the green vegetables and porridge
each day. He encouraged them to eat peanut sticks or bean cakes instead
of sweets or sugar cane and to give them fruit in season.
They said they would do this and began to give
their children the food that the guest had suggested. Soon there was a
change in their children. Mr. Isa and his wife were surprised but happy.
They told the people of the town what had happened.
