INTESTINAL PARASITES: Lesson 1

Round Worms

One day a certain doctor from the city came to visit the village of Yelwa. After greeting the chief and village elders he asked them, "Is there any particular health problem that is bothering the people here?" They all agreed and one man spoke up, "Yes, our children all have worms, we are always seeing them in their feces Many of the children have swollen bellies, are often coughing and their bodies are thin."

The doctor asked them, "Are the people of this town using latrines for defecating?" They told him they were not accustomed to using latrines in this village. He explained to them how the eggs of roundworms are in the feces of a person with worms. If that person defecates on the ground, flies or the wind spread these germs to the food of other people. After a person eats this food the eggs hatch inside him and begin to grow into worms. The worms eat the food the person eats and he therefore doesn't get the use of his food. They also cause one to cough. The doctor told them if everyone would defecate in a latrine or cover the feces with dirt, keep food covered so that flies cannot sit on it, wash hands before eating and after going to the latrine, they would be less troubled with this problem. He told them to go to the market and buy Ketrax and give each child 2 tablets to get rid of the worms in their bodies

The elders of the town were grateful to the doctor for his help. After he left they bought Ketrax and gave it to the children as he had instructed them. The village leaders encouraged everyone in the village to dig a latrine. The people discovered in a few weeks that the doctor's advice was true and they were much less bothered with this problem.
