INTESTINAL PARASITES: Lesson 3

Ali Learns About Tapeworm

Ali' s wife always cooked plenty of food but he felt hungry as soon as he had eaten. Ali could not understand this for he had plenty of food to eat. On market day he especially liked to buy the roast meat on a stick.

One day he was telling a friend of his what was bothering him. He was hungry right after eating and he saw long white worms in his stools. He was growing thinner each day. The friend said that he had been bothered with that problem at one time. He had learned what was causing the constant feeling of hunger when he went to visit the local health post. He had been told that a worm which lives in animals passes into human bodies in meat that is not cooked well. When this worm enters the body it eats the food which a person has eaten, therefore the person feels hungry all the time.

Ali asked his friend if eating the roast meat on a stick in the market could be the source of such worms, and the friend confirmed that it was very probable. He told Ali to also tell his wife to be sure and cook the meat a least twenty minutes.

The next day he went with Ali to the health post where he got medicine for his illness and also heard again how one gets tapeworm. The medicine caused Ali to have diarrhea for a short time in which he saw many white worms. He also stopped eating the roast meat on a stick and instructed his wife to cook their meat well. After that he was not bothered by constant hunger. He began to gain weight and felt stronger.
