Benjamin H. Kean Traveling Fellowship in Tropical Medicine Call for Applications
Deadline April 15, 2008
The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has established a fellowship in Dr. Kean's name, administered by the ASTMH Clinical Group (American Committee on Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health - ACCTMTH), that will provide travel expenses for medical students who arrange clinical tropical medicine or tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by tropical diseases.
Round-trip airfare and up to $1000 toward living expenses will be provided. Kean Fellows will be required to prepare and present reports describing their activities. The deadline to submit applications is Tuesday, April 15.

Project Coordinator, Volunteer Training
(Exxon Mobil Community Summer Jobs Program, 2008 Summer Intern)
CrossLink International (http://www.crosslinkinternational.org) supplies Christian medical mission teams, mission hospitals and clinics around the world with pharmaceutical drugs and over the counter medicines, medical supplies, diagnostic and surgical supplies and equipment, eyeglasses, and hospital equipment. Since its incorporation CrossLink had distributed more than $33 million in medical aid to 120 countries and the USA. It supplies about 300 groups each year.
Application Deadline: The deadline for applications is April 28, 2008. The position must be filled by May 1, 2008.
Dates: 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, May 25 – July 19, 2008 (Option: Extend 2 weeks to July 31st -extension to be paid by CrossLink at the same weekly rate, see below).
Report to: Chief Operating Officer (working closely with CrossLink’s Volunteer Coordinator).
Pay: $2,500 plus optional 2 week extension of $625 Total Pay: $3,125 (10 weeks)
Job Summary: Develop Phase 1 of a General Volunteer Training Program . The program will be used by the Warehouse Coordinatory and Volunteer Coordinator to train new and/or inexperienced volunteers from varied cultures, educational backgrounds and age groups in medical warehouse tasks and procedures. Phase 2: Develop a Clinical Volunteer Training Program(to follow Phase 1; pending progress). This will include working with CrossLink’s clinical staff/Medical Director and/or experienced clinical volunteers to develop a training module for Clinical Volunteers.
Goal of the Internship: Over an 8 (or 10 week) period, develop and document a General Volunteer Training program. Including obtaining and incorporating Staff input, conducting staff training (Train-the-Trainer) and producing procedures, handbooks and other A/V training aids (i.e. Power Point presentation)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Envision flexible training program for multiple warehouse /inventory sorting tasks and procedures.
- Discern goals, strategies, objectives and tactics for the training program by interviewing staff/volunteers/donors.
- Develop training program (s) in three steps : Draft – write the plan, develop associated training materials and gain staff consensus; Pilot Testing – implement plans to test segments of the program on select groups of volunteers; Implementation – ready the program for fulltime use.
- Develop system to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program.
- Write instructions for use by staff members to deploy the training program.
- Train warehouse manager and other staff in methods to add updates to the training program.
- Establish and maintain storage for training materials and files.
- Perform office tasks in support of project, e.g., copying, collating and filing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Self-starter with ability to establish priorities and work with minimal supervision
- Skill to use a personal computer and various software packages including: Microsoft Office’s Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word programs (or similar programs).
- Public relations skills to interview warehouse staff, other staff members and volunteers in order to obtain a list of requirements and desires for a training program.
- Ability to utilize research findings from existing training programs in similar organizations.
Credentials and Experience:
- Completed at least one year of undergraduate education at accredited institution.
- Completed 2008 spring semester and enrolled for 2008 fall semester.
- Documented experience as a volunteer or experienceworking with volunteers.
- Experience with creating audio-visual presentation such as Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Experience and/or study in a clinical/medical field, preferred.
- Public Health and/or Medical Mission trip experience, preferred.
Special Requirements: Attend one full-day seminar conducted by Volunteer Fairfax on June 25, 2008. Includes a requirement to work with Volunteers on Tuesday/Thursday nights and/or Saturdays on an occasional basis (i.e. 1 night and 1 Saturday maximum, per week).
