Curriculum to Teach Christian Religious Leaders about Family Planning

2024

A one-day curriculum that incorporates religious and medical aspects of family planning was used to provide education about family planning to religious leaders in northwest Tanzania. The curriculum, co-taught by Tanzanian religious leaders and health professionals, was tested in a cluster randomized trial in 24 communities. The uptake of family planning increased 19% more in communities in which religious leaders received this educational curriculum, compared to communities in which the educational curriculum was provided after completion of the trial. This data was published in The Lancet Global Health in December 2023. The authors provide the curriculum in English and Kiswahili in the links below with a goal of making this curriculum freely available and accessible to those who would like to use it to provide education in their own communities.
